What happened
OpenAI has announced the launch of its ChatGPT for small business program, which it describes as an initiative to help small businesses be more productive and scale their operations with ChatGPT. According to the company's announcement dated 21 July 2026, the programme is built around helping entrepreneurs adopt ChatGPT Work — an agent that can complete multi-step tasks and help finish complex projects or initiatives end-to-end. ChatGPT Work is powered by GPT-5.6, which OpenAI calls its most advanced model available to businesses of any size and across all subscription plans. The company says ChatGPT Work and GPT-5.6 are available to small businesses today.
The four parts of the programme
OpenAI has structured the programme around four components:
- Hands-on virtual training: Product-specific webinars showing how small businesses can use ChatGPT Work day-to-day, with demos, prompts to try, and workflows across accounting, marketing, ecommerce, and more, plus partner webinars and Q&As.
- In-person AI academies: Events held across the US with the OpenAI Academy team, bringing local business owners together for guided instruction and hands-on exercises.
- New guides: Customer stories, interactive guides you can upload straight into ChatGPT Work, and short-form videos with specific prompts and examples.
- Partner agents and offers: Plugins, skills, and special offers from a curated list of partners including Dropbox, Shopify, Intuit, Slack, Atlassian, and Wix.
Why it matters
OpenAI frames the reality many owners know well: running a small business often means being the marketer, accountant, salesperson, operator, and strategist all at once. The company positions AI as a way to extend individual expertise and increase capacity, arguing that small businesses need the same enterprise-grade technology in an accessible and affordable way. Figures cited from last year's Small Business AI Jams point to early results: OpenAI says 78% of participants built a functional AI workflow in a single day, and 42% saved more than five hours a week with AI. Because GPT-5.6 is available across all plans, owners can choose the level of model that fits the job to balance quality, speed, and cost.
A real-life example
The announcement includes concrete use cases. One owner, Kevin English of Keg Built, is quoted saying that on a single 30-page contractor quote, ChatGPT saved him at least 10 hours of data entry — checking cost, quantity, and item numbers — freeing him to focus on other projects. Here's a practical version you could try yourself in ChatGPT Work: "Review this attached 30-page contractor quote. Extract every line item into a table with columns for item number, description, quantity, unit cost, and total. Flag any rows where quantity multiplied by unit cost does not match the listed total." Another example from OpenAI: send a free-flow voice note and ChatGPT Work will turn your ideas into a concise Slack note you can post to several channels at once. These are the sorts of repetitive tasks the programme aims to shorten.
What next
OpenAI is inviting small businesses to register for virtual and in-person events and to sign up for updates via a form. The company says feedback gathered through webinar Q&As, local events, and surveys will shape its product roadmap and future resources. It calls ChatGPT Work's launch "only the beginning."
