Google Adds AI Study Tools to Search and Gemini — And SMEs Should Take Note

What happened

Google has announced a batch of new AI study tools spread across Search and Gemini, according to TechCrunch. The update includes AI-generated interactive visuals, functional 3D simulations, customised practice quizzes, a dedicated student hub, and the ability to create study documents from uploaded files.

On Search, students can now generate custom tools and simulations to understand complex topics. TechCrunch reports that searching for something like "pH scale" can return an interactive visual inside an AI Overview, and a follow-up question — such as plotting citrus fruits on the pH scale — prompts AI Mode to build a tailored interactive experience. Users can also request practice quizzes on subjects ranging from science and maths to foreign languages, and ask Search to turn uploaded PDFs, docs, slides and handwritten notes into a single-page summary.

Within Gemini, Google is adding multi-step research reports that run in the background. TechCrunch notes that users can ask Gemini to research a topic, close the chat, and get a notification when the report is ready — then discuss the results by voice. Gemini can also generate functional 3D simulations, so a prompt like "show me how DNA works in 3D" returns a structure you can rotate and zoom. A new hub pulls these learning tools together in one place.

Why it matters for businesses

These tools are pitched at students, but the mechanics map neatly onto business needs. Small and medium-sized firms rarely have dedicated learning teams, yet they still need to onboard staff, explain products, and keep knowledge accessible. A feature that turns a stack of PDFs and slides into a clean one-pager is exactly what a busy manager needs when writing training material. Practice quizzes could check whether new hires understood a compliance briefing. Background research reports could brief a sales team before a pitch.

The wider signal is that Gemini's feature set keeps widening. As Google competes with OpenAI and education startups, the assistant is becoming a general tool for turning messy information into structured, digestible formats — something knowledge workers do every day.

A practical example

Say you run a small distribution company and need to train three new warehouse staff on safety procedures. Instead of writing a manual from scratch, you could upload your existing safety slides and a photo of the handwritten checklist pinned to the wall, then ask for a one-page summary of key concepts. Next, prompt: "Create a 10-question quiz on warehouse safety covering manual handling, fire exits and hazard reporting." You now have onboarding material and a knowledge check in minutes. Add a background research request — "summarise current UK warehouse safety guidance" — and you have context to keep the material accurate. What once took an afternoon becomes a short task, and the format is consistent every time.

What next

TechCrunch reports that some features, such as the interactive learning experience in Lens, will roll out in the coming weeks. Expect the line between "study tool" and "work tool" to keep blurring as these capabilities land in the mainstream Gemini and Search products many people already use. Businesses that experiment early will build the habits and templates that make adoption easier later.
